In the UK gas oil is almost synonymous with diesel (actually meaning red diesel - specifically designed for agricultural use), so she would still be mostly right.

Fun fact - my sister thought diesel fuel was more expensive than petrol because it’s heavier so they have to drill deeper to get it out of the ground.
